Barry Martin was the comedian who opened my shows for many years, and my best friend. One night, a few years back, I shared a new melody with him. Barry was sitting at the end of a long picnic table with his boot cocked up, and he said, "That's real pretty. What are you going to do with it?" I told him I didn't know. He said, "You'll think of something," and that night Barry died in his sleep at a hotel in Baton Rouge.
I used that melody to write a song about Barry, and about what a good friend means to you. I never, ever planned to use it on stage, but one night in Columbia, Missouri I shared it with the audience. People came up afterward and told me how important the song was to them, and how much it related to their life. Eventually, it became so popular I decided to put it on the record.
I lead in with a few stories about Barry to give it context. It's not a funny song; it's deeply personal, that's why I chose to put it at the end. It's a real change of pace. The rest of the album is pure comedy, but I hope this one song is as meaningful to at least a few people out there as it is to me.
