Carrington entertains more than 3,000 at Fort Hood
"Hours before Rodney Carrington took the stage, hundreds formed a line
around Abrams Physical Fitness Center Saturday night.
About 3,300
people showed up for Carrington's first all-military show, filling
nearly all the seats in the gymnasium.
"I wanted to do something
for the troops and I haven't had the opportunity," Carrington said
before the show.
Performing a mix of his comedic songs and a
stand-up routine, Carrington had attendees roaring with laughter
throughout the show, covering topics from skipping church to his wife to
different religions and an anecdote about his experience with Toby
Keith.
Jennifer Hahn attended the show with her boyfriend. A
country fan "through and through," Hahn said she's a fan of Carrington
and was looking forward to a fun night out.
Robert West with the
Warrior Transition Brigade learned of Carrington's performance through a
poster when he attended the Kevin Fowler concert at the physical
fitness center last month.
West said he's a fan of Carrington's
"blunt" style of comedy.
Carrington's fan base at Fort Hood was
evident to Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff. Kelsey West
with FMWR said tickets went fast after they were first available
Tuesday, something Carrington said made him "feel good."
"It
makes me feel good," he said. "What they do for me and all of us makes
it possible for us to do what we do."
Closing out Carrington's
performance was Maj. Gen. William Grimsley, Fort Hood's acting senior
mission commander, with a thank you to Carrington and his opener, Craig
Peters. Twenty-three Colorado and Kansas National Guard soldiers
training at North Fort Hood were selected to see the show Saturday.
